As everyone in my social media echo chamber, I’ve been trying to get more into yoga and working out in the last few years. This also meant, that my laundry basked filled up way faster than before – all those extra yoga pants that needed washing! But when I became interested in sustainable clothing, reconsidering my washing habits, was not the first thing that came to my mind, to be honest. However, while it is of course important to regularly wash your clothes, for obvious reasons, every wash not only means using up fresh water, but also the emission of microfibres into the water system. There are lots of articles that explain how this works exactly and the many ways to decrease the amount of microfibres that are released into our rivers and oceans 🐳(I found these articles very helpful: 1, 2 and 3).

What You Can Do

Aside from choosing to wear mostly natural fibres (like cotton, wool and bamboo) and using special washing bags, which keep the fibres from entering the water supply allowing you to disperse of them properly, simply washing your clothing less often may be one of the best things you can do.

Lowering Your Impact

Of course that might seem particularly gross when it comes to your sweaty work out gear, which is where Organic Basics’ SilverTech™ comes into play. The Organic Basics* team asked me if I wanted to be part of their Low Impact Project*, which I was thrilled to be, and so I decided to try out their SilverTech™* Active line. It claims to stay fresh for longer between washes since the polymer fibre is completely covered in natural silver, making the garment odor-controlling and heat regulating. They don’t use nano-silvers which would be washed off over time, but instead additionally use Polygiene®, a permanent fabric treatment made from recycled silver salt that further helps to keeps fresh by inhibiting the growth of odor causing bacteria. Now I wasn’t really sure what to thing of this to be honest, but I wore the leggings and muscle tank for 2 runs and 2 yoga classes in a row and was seriously impressed. It did mot smell of feel sweaty! I only ended up washing them because I spilled something on them 😅

So whether you want to decrease the environmental impact of your laundry or you just hate doing laundry, I can definitely recommend giving the SilverTech™* line a try. I decide you do want to try something from Organic Basics yourself, you can get 10% off your order with the code OLYMOBC2.
